A – Accreditations
Crown Highways take pride in our many accreditations and memberships including – Achilles, Building confidence, CHAS, NERS (National Electrical Registration Scheme), HERS (Highways Electrical Registration Scheme), Construction Line, Safe Contractor, Builder Profile, Drilling and Sawing association, HEA (Highways Electrical Association) and ROSPA.
B – BS11000
In 2016 Crown Highway’s achieved BS11000 accreditation Collaborative Business Relationships, collaboration is a big part of our business and we work collaboratively with all of our clients and suppliers.
C – Civils
Our Civil Engineering department forms a large part of our business, we undertake small works to large scale schemes across the UK. The range of work includes – Traffic Signals, Major Civil schemes, Cycleway Improvements, Utilities and 278 schemes.
D – Detection
We are the largest provider of loop cutting services in the UK, we have eight crews working across the country installing MIDAS, Traffic Counting, Traffic Signal, Weather Station Sensor equipment and Magnetometers.
E – Energy & Enthusiasm
We encourage all our staff to act with energy and enthusiasm whilst carrying out their work, we provide good quality PPE, we invest in new plant and equipment so the workforce have what they need which in terms keeps them happy….after all a happy workforce is a good workforce.
F – Filter Drain Recycling
In 2016 we expanded into Filter Drain Recycling following the purchase of the CR Series 500 recycling machine, we offer our machine to our clients across the UK and have already completed many schemes. Following the early success and requests from clients a second machine has now been purchased.
G – Gantries
Gantries are a familiar sight on our networks, Crown Highways have experience of just about everything you’d expect on a gantry from its foundations to the technology hanging off it. Crown Highways have the capability to install all the directional signage, rotating plank signs, lighting and the electronic message signs affixed to them whilst ensuring the gantry is electrically safe.
H – Highways
The majority of Crown Highways works are carried out on the UK’s Highways, we work on the Motorway networks and local authority routes for an ever increasing number of clients with a diverse portfolio of work.
I – Innovation
Crown Highways is always looking to innovate in the services it delivers, we have invested in a cloud based risk assessment and method statement system (HandsHQ) to reduce the amount of management time spent producing them. We have installed a tyre pressure monitoring system on all our vehicles to ensure our fleet of vehicles operates as efficiently and safe as possible. These along with many other improvements help us strive toward continuous improvement.
J – Joint Improvement Teams
We are an active member of the supply chain for our Tier 1 providers, staff at all levels of our business participate in Joint Improvement Teams and workshops. Our Managing Director Mike Dale chairs a regional Health & Safety JIT within Area 9.
K – Knowledge and Experience
Crown Cutting Services were formed in 1994 and following a large expansion into Civils, Traffic Signal, Technology and Drainage work was renamed as Crown Highways in 2014. We have 25 years of Knowledge & experience working on Highways and Local Authority networks meeting the needs of clients.
L – Lighting
The Lighting Division is now the largest division in the company in terms of turnover and staff numbers, the division has a portfolio full of large scale schemes which is supplemented with a number of smaller more specialist tasks.
The Lighting division are proficient in the following activities – Trenching, ducting, cabling, terminating, testing, LED upgrade projects, Feeder pillar installations, passively safe systems, luma pin replacements and the installation of Central Management Systems.
M – Media
Using social media is an important vehicle for Crown to share with the industry the exciting news of what Crown Highways is doing across the UK, they believe by having a professional website which has content regularly updated increases the amount of traffic and interest in the Crown Highways business.
Crown also use Twitter (@crownhighways) and LinkedIn regularly to keep our profile high and within peoples view to maximize our exposure.
N – Nationwide
Crown Highways has depots/offices in the Midlands and Manchester but services are delivered across the UK, they are able to deliver all schemes to any scale anywhere in the country. In the past 12 months Crown have delivered works in Scotland, Plymouth, Kent and South Wales: A truly nationwide company.
O – Opportunities
Crown Highways are always seeking new opportunities and clients to work with, reviewing all enquiries received and teams are always available to talk through any new proposals.
We also have a large network of existing clients who are regularly asking us to take on additional duties as part of works, our teams relish these challenges and we work with our clients to maximise these opportunities.
P – Plant
Crown have an extensive range of owned plant which services their contracts when they need anything of a specialist nature or additional plant Crown have a large supply chain to call upon to supplement.
In 2017 Crown invested heavily on plant and vehicles in both the Midlands and North-West regions as our owned plant was aging. Crown think it’s important to constantly refresh the equipment provided to their people to keep them safe and to ensure the quality of work is maintained.
Q – Quality
Crown Highways take pride in the quality of work and are always looking for client feedback so they can improve the services they deliver. Internally they have fully compliant quality systems managed by Quality Manager and to supplement this as added security for clients Crown have a specialist Electrical Quality Manager to ensure compliance with lighting schemes.
R – Radar
Inductive loop installation is where Crown Highways began, however, all companies must move with the times and look at newer innovative solutions for its clients. Radar detection has been around for a number of years as a long term replacement for inductive loops as they are not invasive to the carriageway surface and are maintenance free when installed correctly. Crown Highways have installed a number of schemes and are responsible for maintaining all of the Radar detections systems on the M25 network. This is a growing area in the Technology Division and they are looking to grow this side of the business in the coming years.
S – Safety
Safety is of paramount importance to all companies and Crown Highways is no different, Safety is the number one priority as Crown want to ensure all staff return home to their families each night following a shift at work.
Crown proactively report near misses, carry safety leadership and supervisor inspections, use cloud-based risk assessment and method statement software, pre-shift briefings, company and site inductions and actively carry out regular tool box talks to staff.
T – Technology
The Technology Division has been growing for a number of years and now boasts the Loop installation teams, technology engineers/electricians and our M25 traffic monitoring detection contract.
The Technology division are involved in the following activities – site clearance (removal of redundant technology equipment), BS7671 electrical testing and the Installation of Highways cabinets, cables, message sign and other roadside technology equipment.
U – Utilities
Crown Highways have been fully accredited by Lloyds as a National Electrical Registration (NERS) Scheme member, this allows Crown Highways to undertake civils work on national power networks in the UK.
V – Values

W – Welfare
With a large number of schemes on the ground across many different regions, Crown operates a fleet of welfare vans for their workforce. They have invested in a number new welfare vehicles for staff to use. All the Welfare vans are looked after (kept clean) and managed by staff as they are an essential tool for the job.
X – ‘Xtra’ Mile
Crown Highways try to go the extra mile where they can to add more value to a job, if they can undertake some extra works within a closure or a working window we will.
A good example of this is where they picked up the litter, cleaned the signage and the emergency roadside telephones whilst carrying out a filter drain remediation scheme
Y – Yard
The depot in Chasetown has a fully equipped Yard and Garage, this allows Crown to store a variety of materials and to store products they use on a more regular basis. The garage and team are responsible for servicing and repairing their fleet of vehicles and plant should they go faulty.
Z – Zero Tolerance
Crown Highways have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to drugs & alcohol testing, and they test all employees pre-employment, randomly and for cause where required.
All records are kept on file should clients require a copy, if any employees do return non-negative results then the appropriate action is taken.
